Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a free and open source ( license) utility for network exploration or security auditing. (personally my preferred)
Security:

SNORT is an open source network intrusion prevention and detection system utilizing a rule-driven language, which combines the benefits of signature, protocol and anomaly based inspection methods. - tripwire
Open Source Tripwire software is a security and data integrity tool useful for monitoring and alerting on specific file change(s) on a range of systems.
Password Crackers:
- John the ripper
John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for many flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different architectures), Windows, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. Besides several crypt(3) password hash types most commonly found on various Unix flavors, supported out of the box are Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM hashes, plus several more with contributed patches. - md5this
Not really downloadable, but its a project that aims to crack and store md5 hashes, check it out. - Ophcrack : Free windows password cracker.
